JESUS: Who do you say He is? Part 3 “Jesus Our Savior”

(Inspired by the book JESUS: Who Do You Say He Is?)

We’ve already talked about the question that changes everything: “Who do you say He is?” and we’ve talked about the Person of Jesus. Now we step into a big topic, one that makes many uncomfortable: Jesus our Savior.

Story time.

One day, a bold and adventurous man decided to climb a mountain all by himself. No guide, no partner, no safety—just himself, a backpack, and the confidence that he had watched enough survival shows to know exactly what to do. Halfway up the mountain he grabbed a rock ledge covered in loose gravel. He slipped and slid down a steep incline. He wasn’t seriously injured, but he was trapped between two rocks and unable to free himself.

He spent hours trying everything he could think of. Pulling, pushing, scooting, wiggling, hitting, kicking, screaming—nothing worked.

After a full day of making no progress, he swallowed his pride, pulled out his phone, and called for help.

When the rescue team arrived, it only took them a few minutes to pull him to safety.

Later, he said, “I didn't need a lecture. I didn’t need a pep talk. I didn’t need advice. I didn’t need to work harder. I just needed someone who could do what I could not do.”

Welcome, Jesus our Savior.

He’s not Jesus our self‑help guru. Not Jesus our self‑improvement instructor. Not Jesus our drill sergeant. Not Jesus our voice of affirmation to try harder. He is Jesus our rescuer. Salvation is rescue; Jesus is our rescue team.

Here’s something many people do not like to admit: We cannot save ourselves.

We try. Positive thinking. Self‑help improvement. Good works. Moral effort. “I’m a good person… mostly.” “I’m not as bad as so‑and‑so.” “I’m a spiritual person; I’m just not religious.”

But deep down, we know something is missing. Something is not right. We still can’t fix what needs fixing.

Enter the Person of Jesus, our friend, who rescues us from that pit of despair and becomes Jesus our Savior.

1 Peter 2:22 says, “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”

That’s how He can save us.

Not because He was a nice guy or a wise prophet or an inspirational leader, but because He is righteous. He is perfect, holy, sinless, and the spotless lamb able to fulfill the covenant with God and save us.

Jesus is everything we are not. He’s everything we can never be. He’s everything we need.

Jesus did not walk this earth and sacrifice Himself to make bad people good. He did not come to upgrade your life with step‑by‑step “how to” guides. He came to do the hard work for you. He came because He loves you. He came to be the sacrifice for you. He came to save you.

Jesus came to climb into that pit, lift you out of it, and carry you home to be with the Father.

Jesus came to be your Savior.

If Jesus came to save you from what you cannot fix, what does your life reveal—that you’ve embraced His rescue, or that you’d rather stay trapped than admit you need Him.
